Course overview
In this one-day workshop, we will study a fragment of a portrait by 19th-century painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter. Studying work of other artists is a common and essential practice for understanding form and technique, offering deep insight into how great painters approached their subjects. In this workshop we will discuss colour mixing, brushwork, and the application of paint to create depth, volume, and lifelike form.
